The Sonic Genome — Mood Quadrant

Valence × energy: the emotional map of 114 genres

The Sonic Genome — Mood Quadrant. Each of n = 88,732 tracks (2022 Spotify snapshot) plotted by valence (x: musical positivity, 0–1) and energy (y: perceived intensity, 0–1); both axes span the full native feature range with the quadrant boundary at the 0.5 scale midpoint. Low-alpha dots show the per-track distribution behind the summary; diamonds are the 114 genre centroids (unweighted mean valence and energy per genre, ≈780–1,000 tracks each), with up to 28 labeled after a spacing filter. Centroids spread across three quadrants rather than collapsing on the global mean: metal and punk sit deep in Sad/Intense, children's and salsa in Happy/Intense, sleep and ambient in Sad/Calm — while Happy/Calm is nearly empty of whole genres.
